Patient Care Technician, Dialysis
Overview
You will deliver dialysis therapy to patients with chronic kidney disease at a specific clinic scale. You will operate hemodialysis machines, manage vascular access, and monitor patient responses during treatment. You will collaborate with a team of nurses and technicians under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. This role stands out for its structured training program and certification pathway.
What You'll Do10
- 1Welcome assigned patients and assess their wellbeing since the last treatment.
- 2Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law.
- 3Initiate dialysis treatment per physician orders, including setting blood flow and dialysate flow.
- 4Monitor patients during dialysis, interpreting intradialytic problems and intervening per physician orders.
- 5Obtain vital signs, perform standing and sitting blood pressure, and discontinue treatment safely.
- 6Calculate and program Ultrafiltration goals and treatment times on the dialysis machine.
- 7Document vital signs and treatment parameters accurately on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
- 8Report significant changes in patient condition to the registered nurse or supervisor.
- 9Clean and disinfect dialysis machines and equipment between treatments per facility policy.
- 10Support education of patients and families on dialysis and home dialysis options.
Requirements8
- 1High School diploma or G.E.D.
- 2State and/or national certification in dialysis within the CMS timeline
- 3CPR certification
- 4Completion of the organization dialysis training program
- 5Pass the Ishihara Color Blindness Test (or reasonable accommodation)
- 6Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and stand for prolonged periods
- 7Travel between assigned facilities
- 8Previous patient care experience in hospital or related setting preferred
