Park Maintenance Technician - Grounds Keeping
Overview
You will own the day-to-day care of Mesquite's park grounds, covering 50+ acres of green spaces, trails, and facilities. You'll join a district team of 5 technicians under a District Park Supervisor, working a steady Monday-Friday schedule with occasional weekend overtime. This role stands out for its direct impact on public safety and community enjoyment, plus a clear path to cross-train in the Urban Forestry Program.
What You'll Do8
- 1Trim trees and shrubs, pull weeds, and mow and edge lawns across assigned parks, completing each zone within the weekly rotation.
- 2Clear fallen trees and debris from public paths and walkways within 24 hours of storms to maintain safe access.
- 3Operate power tools, lawn mowers, trucks, and tractors; perform daily refueling, lubrication, and minor adjustments to keep equipment ready.
- 4Inspect park facilities and playgrounds for hazards, documenting issues and fixing minor repairs on the spot.
- 5Empty trash containers and pick up litter throughout assigned parks, maintaining cleanliness standards that pass monthly audits.
- 6Support the Urban Forestry Program during citywide tree planting events, helping plant 200+ new trees each season.
- 7Drive to and from work sites as directed, logging trips and material usage in the daily time record.
- 8Assist in park inspections alongside the supervisor, noting safety hazards and completing basic maintenance like tightening bolts and replacing light bulbs.
Requirements8
- 13 months of park maintenance or landscape experience, including hands-on use of basic groundskeeping tools.
- 2Valid driver's license with a clean record to operate city vehicles and trailers.
- 3Ability to lift 50 pounds and stand, bend, and walk for 8-hour shifts in outdoor weather conditions.
- 4High school diploma or equivalent; formal education in horticulture or turf management is a plus.
- 5Experience with power equipment (mowers, trimmers, blowers) and the ability to troubleshoot minor mechanical issues.
- 6Basic reading and math skills to follow safety protocols and maintain time and material logs.
- 7Availability to work Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM-3:30 PM, plus mandated overtime and weekend rotations during peak seasons.
- 8Knowledge of safe pesticide and fertilizer handling procedures is preferred but not required.
