Orientation and Mobility Specialist, School-Based (COMS)
Overview
You will own mobility instruction for students who are blind or visually impaired across elementary, middle, and high schools in Independence, MO. This full-time contract role runs August 24 to May 28, with a Monday-Friday schedule. You will join a district team that provides extensive support and orientation. The role ends with students confidently navigating their environments using cane techniques, Braille, and guide dog handling.
What You'll Do6
- 1Evaluate the mobility needs of assigned students and craft individual plans that target safe travel and independence.
- 2Deliver direct instruction in orientation and mobility skills to students at all grade levels, including cane techniques and guide dog handling.
- 3Teach daily living skills such as Braille reading, grocery shopping, and money management to build student confidence.
- 4Collaborate with school staff and families to align mobility goals with classroom learning and support.
- 5Travel between multiple campuses within the district to provide consistent services.
- 6Maintain accurate documentation and progress reports for each student to track growth and adjust strategies.
Requirements6
- 1National-level certification in Orientation and Mobility (ACVREP/COMS).
- 2Experience supporting students who are blind or visually impaired, preferably in a school setting.
- 3Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with students, families, and school teams.
