Overview
As an Orientation and Mobility Specialist, you will own travel instruction for K-12 students across a Kansas City district, helping them navigate schools and communities safely. You will serve elementary through high school learners in a full-time onsite contract from August through May, with flexibility for the right candidate. You will partner with educators, families, and district staff to craft individualized plans that build independence and confidence. What You'll Do6
- 1Perform orientation and mobility evaluations for students across grade levels within the first 30 days, identifying needs and baseline skills.
- 2Teach independent travel techniques, including cane use, guide dog handling, and navigation in urban and rural settings, to meet student goals.
- 3Instruct daily living skills such as grocery shopping, money management, and Braille basics to foster self-reliance.
- 4Collaborate with teachers, families, and district staff to develop and adapt individualized education plans for each student.
- 5Document student progress and service delivery accurately, ensuring compliance with district and state guidelines.
- 6Engage in ongoing professional development and district orientation to update skills and align with best practices.
Requirements6
- 1Current ACVREP certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS).
- 21+ years experience teaching students with visual impairments to travel safely and independently.
- 3Proficiency in orientation and mobility assessments and lesson planning.
- 4Ability to work directly with students who are blind or visually impaired in K-12 settings.
- 5Comfort teaching cane skills, guide dog use, Braille, and independent living tasks.
- 6Strong communication and collaboration skills for team-based planning and parent interaction.
