Lead Histotechnologist San Francisco
Overview
Retro seeks a Lead Histotechnologist to establish in-house histology capabilities in San Francisco. The role involves managing histology workflows for Microglia Tissue Reprogramming and Autophagy teams while collaborating with a startup culture focused on rapid iteration and transparency. This position requires independent leadership and operational ownership.
What You'll Do11
- 1Own day-to-day histology operations including workflow prioritization quality control and turnaround timelines
- 2Triaging and scheduling work across programs while communicating realistic timelines and flagging conflicts early
- 3Performing tissue and organoid embedding paraffin and frozen sectioning vibratome sectioning and slide preparation
- 4Conducting IHC and IF staining including protocol optimization and antibody validation
- 5Developing documentation for SOPs to build institutional knowledge
- 6Operating histology equipment such as embedding centers microtomes cryostats vibratomes water baths and fume hoods
- 7Coordinating with CROs for tissue processing and ensuring quality of incoming samples
- 8Assisting with imaging of stained sections or coordinating imaging support
- 9Managing histology supplies inventory and lab organization
- 10Providing guidance to scientists on tissue collection fixation and handling best practices
- 11Thriving with 5+ years of hands-on histology experience including FFPE workflows and antibody troubleshooting
Requirements7
- 15+ years of hands-on histology experience with FFPE workflows including embedding microtomy and staining
- 2Proficiency with paraffin sectioning cryosectioning and vibrating sectioning techniques
- 3Experience with IHC and/or IF staining including antibody titration and protocol troubleshooting
- 4Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple concurrent requests
- 5Strong organizational skills with meticulous record keeping and lab maintenance
- 6Clear communication abilities for discussing tissue orientation and coordinating logistics
- 7Hands-on proactive mindset ready to execute tasks without direction
