Overview
Mercor is seeking hands-on experimental scientists and engineers with deep expertise in inorganic materials, superconductors, and semiconductors to help build frontier AI models for materials science. You'll apply your specialized knowledge to generate, structure, and evaluate the scientific data these models learn from, directly shaping how they reason about materials, devices, and fabrication processes. This is a remote, expert-level contract role paying $84/hour for long-term, ongoing work.
What You'll Do6
- 1Apply your domain expertise in synthesis, characterization, fabrication, and device physics to create and refine high-quality training and evaluation datasets.
- 2Review and critique AI-generated scientific reasoning, catching errors and strengthening overall technical accuracy.
- 3Design and solve complex, expert-level problems within your specific area of specialization.
- 4Score and rank model outputs against defined scientific criteria, providing clear written justifications for your decisions.
- 5Organize experimental procedures, characterization results, and process data into well-structured, model-ready formats.
- 6Deliver reliable, high-quality work consistently within agreed timelines.
Requirements5
- 1Hands-on experimental experience in at least one of: inorganic synthesis (solid-state, solution, solvothermal, or sol-gel), superconducting materials, or semiconductors/advanced packaging.
- 2Strong materials or device characterization skills using techniques such as XRD, SEM, TEM, spectroscopy, or electrical/transport measurements.
- 3Experience with thin-film growth or device fabrication (e.g., MBE, MOCVD, CVD, sputtering, IBAD, etching, clean-room microfabrication) is a plus.
- 4An advanced degree (PhD or MS) or equivalent hands-on experience in materials science, chemistry, physics, or a related engineering field.
- 5Clear written English and the ability to explain technical reasoning concisely.
