Overview

Mercor is looking for PhD-level chemists to help make advanced AI models safer by testing their understanding of specialized chemistry topics. In this remote, part-time role, you'll apply your scientific expertise to write expert-level prompts, evaluate model responses for accuracy, and classify conversations using structured guidelines. No prior AI or machine learning experience is required—full training on the workflow is provided. It's a unique opportunity to put deep chemistry knowledge to work on a meaningful safety-focused project while earning $65–$70 per hour.

What You'll Do5

  • 1Craft advanced prompts across a wide range of specialized chemistry subjects.
  • 2Review and annotate AI-generated answers for scientific correctness, usefulness, and safe handling of sensitive content.
  • 3Apply a defined set of guidelines to sort and categorize prompts and conversations.
  • 4Use your chemistry background to spot errors, gaps, or problematic responses in model outputs.
  • 5Contribute to improving AI safety by providing expert-level feedback on model behavior.

Requirements5

  • 1A PhD in chemistry or a closely related field (completed or in progress), including areas like organic, inorganic, analytical, physical, medicinal, or computational chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science.
  • 2Strong working knowledge of modern laboratory and computational techniques within your subfield.
  • 3Excellent scientific reasoning and clear technical writing skills in English.
  • 4Sound judgment around chemical safety and the responsible handling of dual-use information.
  • 5Nice-to-have experience includes coursework or research in chemical safety/security, synthesis, hazardous-materials handling, or reviewing/grading/red-teaming technical content.

Who Should Apply

This role is perfect for a PhD-level chemist who wants to use their specialized expertise in a non-traditional setting. If you're comfortable evaluating complex scientific material, enjoy clear written communication, and care about the responsible development of AI, you'll thrive here. No AI background is needed—just a sharp scientific mind and a commitment to accuracy and safety.
