Forward Deployed Engineer, AI for Mining
Overview
You will own the technical relationship with mining customers, deploying AI across operational sites to reduce downtime and improve safety. As the first forward deployed engineer at Realm, you'll bridge field realities with engineering, building tools that predict failures and monitor compliance. You'll work on a small, senior team shipping daily to production mines, backed by founders from Palantir and leadership from Uber. This role offers direct impact on global industrial outcomes and the chance to shape the forward deployed function.
What You'll Do9
- 1Spend 25% of your time onsite with customers across the US, building ground-truth understanding of operations.
- 2Prototype tools and integrations in the field using Python and other scripting languages to validate ideas rapidly.
- 3Troubleshoot complex systems, including SCADA interfaces, ROS cameras, and OPC-UA pipelines, in degraded environments.
- 4Translate field insights into technical specs for engineering, covering REST APIs, data pipelines, and hardware integrations.
- 5Lead integration work for AWS deployments, on-prem edge devices, and security-sensitive setups.
- 6Drive cross-functional problem solving with engineering to align features with real-world constraints.
- 7Support pre-sales by traveling to prospect sites to demonstrate product value and gather technical requirements.
- 8Advocate for customer needs internally, using data from the field to inform product roadmap.
- 9Build the foundation for Realm's forward deployed engineering team, including processes and culture.
Requirements9
- 12+ years in software engineering or forward deployed roles, shipping impactful software.
- 2Strong coding skills in Python or C++, and comfort with Git and Linux.
- 3Experience working with enterprise, industrial, or government clients in mission-critical settings.
- 4Ability to lead cross-functional problem solving, from idea through delivery.
- 5Thrive in ambiguity, with structured thinking and prioritization skills.
- 6Excellent communication, simplifying technical complexity for varied audiences.
- 7Hands-on prototyping with AI-assisted coding tools like Copilot or ChatGPT.
- 8US citizen or permanent resident, willing to travel 25% onsite across the US.
- 9Nice to have: experience with AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, or industrial protocols like Modbus and MQTT.
