Director of Material Sourcing and R&D, Apparel
Overview
You will lead the end-to-end strategy and sustainable development of fabrics and trims at Beyond Yoga, aligning with long-range plans and seasonal priorities. Reporting to senior leadership, you will drive material innovation with key mill partners and build a comprehensive material portfolio. You will operate cross-functionally with Merchandising, Design, and Product Development while mentoring a team. This role uniquely blends sustainability strategy with hands-on technical execution, shaping proprietary fabrics like Spacedye for a growing global brand.
What You'll Do9
- 1Build a material innovation roadmap that brings proprietary fabrics like Spacedye from concept to market-ready scale.
- 2Drive the Beyond Yoga Material Sustainability strategy, integrating with LS&Co. corporate goals and ensuring certifications like Global Organic Textile Standard are met.
- 3Own the material library, including spec sheets, test results, and color approvals, ensuring all materials meet performance and aesthetic standards.
- 4Collaborate with Design and Merchandising to translate product visions into actionable material development briefs.
- 5Lead supplier readiness by troubleshooting issues during sampling and production, securing on-time delivery and quality.
- 6Manage the color approval process, overseeing lab dips, strike-offs, knit-downs, and handloom approvals against seasonal palettes.
- 7Communicate material costing and trade-offs to stakeholders, balancing innovation with cost and sustainability targets.
- 8Implement process improvements to streamline development workflows, ensuring adherence to milestones and deadlines.
- 9Stay ahead of industry trends and competitor products, leveraging insights to refine material direction.
Requirements8
- 110+ years in Material R&D and product development, with deep expertise in textile technology, sourcing, and testing.
- 2Advanced degree in Textile Technology or related field, with a focus on performance materials for active brands.
- 3Proven experience leading change management and influencing senior-level partners across functions.
- 4Strong fabric construction knowledge across knits, wovens, yarns, or trims, plus dyeing, printing, and finishing techniques.
- 5Demonstrated ability to set and achieve seasonal deadlines while tracking team milestones.
- 6Excellent communication skills, direct and clear with executives and external partners.
- 7Customer-service orientation with a collaborative, solutions-driven mindset.
- 8Experience with sustainability frameworks like Higg Index or ZDHC is a plus.
