Custodian Porter, Staten Island Shelter
Overview
You will own cleanliness and safety across a family shelter in Staten Island. Homes for the Homeless runs NYC shelters where families access onsite programs. You will join a small facilities team reporting to the Director of Building Operations. This role turns over units and keeps common areas spotless for up to 100 residents. You get 3 weeks paid vacation and a 403(b) plan.
What You'll Do6
- 1Clean common areas: vacuum, sweep, scrub, wax, and polish floors with powered machines
- 2Sanitize restrooms and cafeteria daily, restocking cleaning supplies
- 3Turn over units: dust furniture, walls, and equipment, disinfect surfaces
- 4Inspect the building for safety hazards and report issues to the Director of Building Operations
- 5Handle grounds maintenance: mow grass and clear snow from sidewalks
- 6Support other custodial tasks as assigned by the facilities team
Requirements5
- 11+ years in custodial work, familiar with cleaning equipment and chemicals
- 2Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and lift up to 60 pounds
- 3Stand for 9 hours per shift
- 4Work 8am-4pm or 2pm-10pm shifts, including weekends
- 5Pass a background check and drug screening
