Custodial Driver/Facilities Operator at Maryland Zoo
Overview
You will maintain and clean the Zoo's buildings, grounds, and guest areas as part of the Guest Services team, ensuring a safe and welcoming experience for all visitors. Acting as a lead trainer for daily custodial staff, you'll uphold high standards of cleanliness and guest service while supporting the Zoo's mission to save wildlife. You'll operate a truck and golf cart, perform minor grounds maintenance, and handle event setups, all while communicating via radio and following safety protocols. This role offers a dynamic outdoor work environment with a focus on guest interaction and operational excellence.
What You'll Do10
- 1Train daily custodial staff to ensure maximum guest service and uphold Zoo cleanliness standards.
- 2Maintain sanitary conditions in public and non-public restrooms across Zoo grounds.
- 3Order, store, and distribute janitorial and bathroom supplies on a weekly basis.
- 4Clean assigned rooms and rental spaces, including walls, floors, and windows.
- 5Sweep, mop, strip wax, and buff floors; sweep and hose walkways; remove trash and debris.
- 6Replace light bulbs and implement pest management strategies.
- 7Wear appropriate personal protective gear and comply with blood borne pathogens and zoonotic disease prevention protocols.
- 8Assist with event setup and breakdown, and operate company truck and golf cart for campus tasks.
- 9Perform minor grounds maintenance such as snow removal and spreading ice melt.
- 10Provide guests with information on Zoo exhibits, activities, routes, and safety; use radio system to communicate.
Requirements10
- 16+ months related experience and/or training, with prior custodial experience preferred.
- 2Valid and unrestricted driver's license required; driving permits not sufficient.
- 3Completion of onsite ladder safety training course.
- 4Ability to stand and remain active for an 8-hour shift and walk large areas of the Zoo.
- 5Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, humidity, cold, and wet conditions.
- 6Flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events.
- 7Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, carry, or move objects.
- 8Experience operating equipment such as computer, telephone, two-way radio, and janitorial machinery.
- 9Skill in using cleaning tools, hand tools, gardening tools, and carpentry tools.
- 10Ability to drive pick-up truck and golf cart.
