Bilingual Forestry Technician, Ecological Restoration
Overview
You will own restoration of native forests, prairies, and wetlands across the northern Willamette valley and Columbia River Gorge. You will translate between English and Spanish in the field, direct crews, and apply herbicides to invasive species. You will work with a team of seasonal and year-round employees, many of whom speak Spanish, and you will help integrate them into daily operations. This role combines hands-on fieldwork with leadership and translation, offering $28-$30/hour, full benefits, and a SIMPLE IRA with 3% match.
What You'll Do8
- 1Lead crews in herbicide application on invasive species using chainsaws, brushcutters, and augers
- 2Translate instructions and safety briefings between English and Spanish during daily field operations
- 3Plant native species including bare-root and containerized plants, trees, shrubs, plugs, and bulbs
- 4Track crew time, herbicide usage, and materials at project sites with Replicon and Google Suite
- 5Operate and maintain gas-powered tools and vehicles, including trucks and trailers
- 6Coordinate with third-party crews to ensure project needs are met on site
- 7Make independent decisions on plant identification and treatment methods in remote areas
- 8Conduct post-project monitoring and mapping using ESRI products and other field software
Requirements10
- 12+ years of field work in ecological restoration or a related discipline
- 2Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English for speaking, reading, and writing
- 3Certification in first aid and CPR (or ability to obtain within 90 days)
- 4Experience with herbicide application and safety protocols
- 5Knowledge of Pacific Northwest native and invasive plant species
- 6Ability to perform 10 hours of strenuous physical work per day in varying weather
- 7Clean driving record and ability to drive large trucks and trailers
- 8Experience using ESRI products, Replicon, and Google Suite for field data collection
- 9Ability to motivate and correct crew members while maintaining a positive team culture
- 10Willingness to work overtime during peak seasons and travel to remote sites
