Overview

You will own portfolio management and underwriting for a complex Japanese corporate loan portfolio at MUFG, focusing on non-investment grade clients and structured finance. You will analyze credit risk, determine ratings, and prepare detailed credit applications for 5+ complicated relationships. You will collaborate with business lines and credit divisions, ensuring policy compliance and supporting junior analysts. This role offers direct exposure to global banking operations and requires fluency in Japanese.

What You'll Do10

  • 1Perform due diligence and credit reviews for a portfolio of complex Japanese corporate clients, including lower-rated and structured finance relationships.
  • 2Determine accurate credit ratings and present recommendations to management, using Excel for financial analysis and PowerPoint for presentations.
  • 3Prepare detailed credit applications following Americas Credit Standards and internal manuals, assessing borrower industries, businesses, legal and financial risks.
  • 4Interview senior management of borrowers to evaluate business and financial risks and challenges.
  • 5Coordinate with relationship managers and internal teams to communicate critical account information and ensure compliance with covenants and reporting requirements.
  • 6Lead credit underwriting for new deals of moderate complexity, identifying structural risks and negotiating deal terms and covenants.
  • 7Advise account officers on credit risks and terms to optimize profitability and minimize credit costs.
  • 8Ensure compliance with external regulatory requirements from JFSA, BOJ, FRB, OCC, and FDIC.
  • 9Support junior analysts through on-the-job training and assist managers in training efforts.
  • 10Monitor and maintain compliance reporting requirements.

Requirements9

  • 13-5 years of experience in credit and risk functions at large financial institutions or equivalent analytical roles in accounting or consulting firms.
  • 2Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field; MBA or CFA is a plus.
  • 3Proficiency in MS Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • 4Sound knowledge of finance, accounting, legal, and regulations for commercial banking products.
  • 5Fluency in Japanese (reading, writing, and speaking) is required.
  • 6Experience handling complex credit portfolios, including non-investment grade clients or structured finance.
  • 7Strong time management and organizational skills to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • 8Ability to work under high stress and time-sensitive environments with attention to detail.
  • 9Demonstrated innovative and strategic thinking in credit analysis and risk assessment.
