Overview

You will own legal strategy for HCP's global studio and real estate portfolio, reporting directly to the General Counsel. You'll handle acquisitions, dispositions, financings, joint ventures, and leasing across the company's 37 million square feet of assets. Your day-to-day spans corporate governance, employment, compliance, and litigation oversight, working with internal teams and outside counsel. This role is for a 2+ year attorney who wants to drive deals from a top-tier platform. You'll also help modernize the Legal Department with AI-assisted drafting and workflow automation.

What You'll Do10

  • 1Draft and negotiate leases, purchase and sale agreements, loan documents, joint venture agreements, and NDAs for the global portfolio.
  • 2Advise on real estate, corporate, employment, compliance, and regulatory matters, collaborating with outside counsel as needed.
  • 3Conduct legal research and deliver practical, business-oriented advice to internal teams, escalating complex issues to senior counsel.
  • 4Review fund, joint venture, investor, and lender governance, including consent rights, approval requirements, and reporting obligations.
  • 5Oversee litigation, claims, disputes, and subpoenas, developing strategy with outside counsel and managing budgets.
  • 6Coordinate insurance claims and tenders to minimize risk across the portfolio.
  • 7Manage corporate governance and entity management for all managed entities.
  • 8Support the implementation of AI-assisted drafting and contract lifecycle management tools.
  • 9Drive deal outcomes by spotting risks and providing actionable advice to the investment team.
  • 10Ensure compliance with internal policies and legal requirements across every transaction.

Requirements9

  • 1J.D. from a top-tier law school and active membership in the California State Bar.
  • 22+ years of sophisticated commercial real estate transactions at a top-tier firm or in-house.
  • 3Experience with commercial leasing, acquisitions, dispositions, financings, joint ventures, and development.
  • 4Skill in providing practical, business-oriented legal advice with sound judgment.
  • 5Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet demanding deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • 6Independent work style with strong collaboration skills and superior attention to detail.
  • 7Excellent writing, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • 8Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • 9Familiarity with studios, entertainment agreements, labor law, or litigation is a plus.
