Overview
As a WIC Nutrition Assistant Certifier at Sea Mar Community Health Centers, you will own participant enrollment, benefit delivery, and client file maintenance for a federally funded nutrition program serving diverse communities across Detroit. What You'll Do9
- 1Maintain complete and up-to-date WIC charts, documenting counseling sessions per program guidelines and managing statistical records including documentation flow sheets, diet records, certification sheets, weight/height grids, and appointment scheduling.
- 2Establish collaborative relationships with WIC team members and other Sea Mar staff, serving as a liaison between nutrition services and community resources to facilitate referrals.
- 3Interview clients from diverse populations, review and document history, anthropometric and lab data, and assess eating habits using standardized tools and department protocols.
- 4Perform screening procedures such as weighing, measuring, taking hematocrits and hemoglobin, plotting growth grids, and evaluating dietary intake to determine eligibility and nutrition risk.
- 5Determine appropriate food packages, explain nutrient content of WIC foods, issue manual or computerized food benefits, and document benefit issuance accurately.
- 6Provide program orientation, nutrition education, and scheduling assistance while considering client needs and programmatic requirements.
- 7Identify high-risk clients requiring immediate dietitian attention, make appropriate referrals, and facilitate appointments to ensure timely care.
- 8Assist with clerical and statistical program work, including completing participant reports, maintaining records, and compiling monthly statistics.
- 9Promote breastfeeding and community nutrition education, including travel as needed, and attend required meetings and continuing education sessions.
Requirements9
- 1High School or GED diploma.
- 21 year previous experience as WIC Clerk or in a WIC program, desired.
- 3Completion of the Minimum Paraprofessional Competencies as defined by Washington State WIC Program within guidelines set in WIC/Nutrition Policies and Procedures.
- 4Must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR within 90 days of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
- 5Must pass a background check from the Washington State Patrol and sign an oath of permanent confidentiality.
- 6Ability to travel in Western Washington in a timely manner for work duties.
- 7Ability to lift 35 pounds above 4 feet without assistance.
- 8Bilingual, bicultural English/Spanish preferred.
- 9Must have and maintain a TB test annually and receive annual influenza vaccine (or approved exemption with mask requirement).
