Overview
You will own medical and surgical care for a 20,000+ annual animal population at one of the nation's largest open-admission shelters. The team of DVMs, technicians, and support staff relies on your critical thinking to solve complex cases daily. This role blends population health, surgery, and community outreach, with a 90% placement rate. You will shape protocols alongside the VP of Animal Health and Welfare. What You'll Do10
- 1Drive continuous improvement of the shelter medical plan with the VP, focusing on population-based preventive care.
- 2Perform daily rounds and health monitoring to identify and track disease patterns across species.
- 3Triage and examine animals in shelter and foster care, stabilizing trauma cases efficiently.
- 4Manage a varied surgical caseload, overseeing support staff during pre, intra, and postoperative periods.
- 5Issue Certificates of Veterinary Inspection and document cruelty cases for legal proceedings.
- 6Liaise with pet owners, foster parents, and adopters to ensure smooth transitions.
- 7Work in the public-facing urgent access clinic as needed.
- 8Collaborate with all departments to advance animals along the adoption path.
- 9Mentor team members in training sessions, sharing knowledge and learning from others.
- 10Contribute to placement and euthanasia decisions, maintaining accurate medical records.
Requirements10
- 1DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
- 2Active license to practice veterinary medicine in New York State.
- 3USDA accreditation or eligibility for accreditation.
- 4Strong surgical and diagnostic skills, with ability to handle high-volume cases.
- 5Capability to lift 50 lbs or more.
- 6Previous clinical experience, particularly in shelters, preferred.
- 7Excellent communication skills with animals and people.
- 8Understanding of shelter medicine, epidemiology, and herd health.
- 9Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, with strong multitasking and prioritization skills.
- 10Dependable and reliable, with a collaborative team mindset.
