Staff Attorney, Public Benefits Unit | Houston TX
Overview
Own and manage civil public benefits cases at scale in the Houston office for LSLA. You will litigate, advise clients, and lead outreach efforts to expand access to justice. Work with a team of attorneys, paralegals, and community educators in a mission-driven nonprofit setting. This role offers opportunities to mentor junior staff and engage in Spanish and English bilingual outreach.
What You'll Do10
- 1Build and file civil lawsuits and draft legal documents to support clients in public benefits matters
- 2Interview clients and witnesses to gather evidence and assess eligibility for benefits, preparing for court appearances and agency proceedings
- 3Represent clients in court and before quasi-judicial agencies, interpreting laws and regulations for the client community
- 4Lead outreach and community education initiatives to raise awareness of public benefits rights and LSLA services
- 5Coordinate activities of subordinate staff and volunteers to ensure effective case management and timely deliverables
- 6Attend evening legal clinics and participate in community events to extend LSLA's mission
- 7Advise clients on legal rights and options, and negotiate on their behalf to secure benefits
- 8Supervise and coordinate case preparation, including discovery and document production
- 9Contribute to the development of legal strategies and resource materials for public benefits practice
- 10Support travel to multiple Texas counties served by the Houston office for client service
Requirements10
- 1Graduate of an accredited Law School
- 2Licensed to practice in Texas or qualify for reciprocity
- 3Prior legal services or public interest experience preferred
- 4Strong legal writing and oral communication skills
- 5Demonstrated client service orientation
- 6Skilled in interviewing, assessment, problem solving and negotiation
- 7Strong ability to work under pressure and make decisions quickly
- 8Demonstrated ability to aggressively pursue the rights of the client community
- 9Bilingual (Spanish & English) speaking/writing skills preferred
- 10Reliable transportation to travel throughout all Texas counties served by this office
