Solid Waste and Recycling Worker, UT Austin
Overview
You will own the safe and efficient collection of landfill trash, recycling, and compost across The University of Texas at Austin campus and assigned off-campus locations. You will support drivers with route completion, container handling, and material loading and unloading. Working within Facilities Services, you will join a team dedicated to enhancing the student experience through impactful operational work. This role stands out for its direct contribution to campus sustainability and the opportunity to support major university events, including football home games. You will operate university vehicles such as box trucks and pickup trucks, and use electronic systems for documentation.
What You'll Do11
- 1Collect and transport landfill, recycling, and compost materials from campus locations, assisting drivers with route completion, including loading, unloading, moving, staging, and servicing containers.
- 2Operate university vehicles, including box trucks, pickup trucks, and utility carts, to support collection and transport duties.
- 3Ground guide vehicle movement in tight areas, including loading docks, service drives, and high-pedestrian zones, while maintaining situational awareness.
- 4Clean, sweep, and maintain dumpsters, compactors, and waste corral areas to meet university cleanliness and safety standards.
- 5Report blocked access, waste contamination, and safety concerns to crew leaders or supervisors.
- 6Follow verbal and written instructions from crew leaders and supervisors related to collection routes, priorities, and safety protocols.
- 7Wear required Personal Protective Equipment and participate in required training.
- 8Use assigned electronic systems, tablets, smartphones, or paper forms to document completed work and report issues, including updating electronic work orders.
- 9Demonstrate professional conduct, communicating respectfully with students, staff, and visitors, and actively support teamwork.
- 10Support university and athletic events, including football home games, and special assignments such as event cleanups, move-outs, bulk pickups, and inclement weather response.
- 11Work overtime, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or adjusted schedules as required.
Requirements9
- 1High school diploma or GED.
- 2Valid Class "C" driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record; must obtain Texas license within 30 days of residency.
- 3Meet University of Texas System driver eligibility standards.
- 4Ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- 5Ability to perform physical labor, including walking, bending, lifting, climbing, and using hand tools.
- 6Working knowledge of smartphones, tablets, and apps for communication.
- 7Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- 8Must pass a background check and pre-employment screening.
- 9Preferred: Experience in solid waste, recycling, compost, custodial, moving, delivery, or field operations; experience operating large trucks; experience with container handling and safe material handling; experience in a university or municipal environment.
