Senior Software Engineer, Autonomous Systems & C++
Overview
You will design and build C++ and Python components for Vektor, Forterra's edge-deployed communication and data-brokering layer for autonomous ground systems. Your work directly supports soldiers and critical infrastructure in DDIL (disrupted, degraded, intermittent, low-bandwidth) environments. You will join a team of engineers shaping how autonomous platforms connect and share data under extreme constraints. This role offers the chance to own mission-critical middleware and networking subsystems, with direct impact on battlefield safety and effectiveness.
What You'll Do8
- 1Design C++ and Python components for middleware, configuration management, and data logging in distributed robotic platforms.
- 2Translate system requirements into reliable, maintainable software using ROS, DDS, Protobuf, and gRPC.
- 3Validate software for safety, reliability, and security across mission-critical autonomous systems.
- 4Debug real-world communication and networking failures from deployed ground systems.
- 5Implement unit, integration, and system tests using Linux tools and frameworks.
- 6Profile and optimize software performance on embedded and networked hardware.
- 7Drive the evolution of communication architecture for DDIL environments.
- 8Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate autonomy, sensing, and networking stacks.
Requirements6
- 15+ years of experience developing in Linux environments.
- 2Hands-on experience with middleware frameworks and communication protocols: ROS, DDS, Protobuf, gRPC.
- 3Proven ability to write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
- 4Strong understanding of multi-threaded programming, concurrency, and performance optimization.
- 5Experience designing scalable systems and developing clean, intuitive APIs.
- 6Eligibility to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance.
