Senior Frontend Engineer, Design Systems & Commerce
Overview
You will own the frontend of our storefront, product detail, collection, and category pages, plus seasonal landing pages, at a venture-backed e-bike startup spun out of Rivian. You will build with Shopify and React to shorten the distance between creative concept and live page. Working with a small team of engineers, designers, and brand partners, you will steward the design system and enable self-serve page composition. This role stands apart because you will shape the online customer experience from first campaign click to checkout, in a greenfield environment where your technical and creative judgment directly impacts conversion.
What You'll Do8
- 1Build the frontend of our storefront, product detail pages, collection and category pages, gear shop, and seasonal landing pages, using Shopify Liquid and React.
- 2Extend and steward the design system, growing the component library, design tokens, and page-composition patterns so they enable creative expression without slowing down shipping.
- 3Architect Shopify theme sections, blocks, metafields, and metaobjects so creative and merchandising partners can launch pages without engineer involvement for every change.
- 4Drive projects from Figma mockups or rough ideas to shipped pages, making judgment calls on interactions, responsive behavior, and performance.
- 5Own merchandising surfaces including faceted filtering, sort, variant and colorway selection, swatch logic, cross-sell and bundle modules, badging, and inventory-aware states.
- 6Ship and manage multiple concurrent seasonal campaigns with clean scheduling, staged launches, and graceful takedowns.
- 7Maintain high quality bar across Core Web Vitals, accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA), responsive behavior, cross-browser correctness, and analytics instrumentation.
- 8Define and integrate data and API contracts with backend engineering, keeping the boundary between presentation and business logic clean.
Requirements10
- 16+ years of frontend engineering, including 3+ years on commerce storefronts.
- 2Deep, hands-on experience with Shopify Liquid, Online Store 2.0 theme architecture, Storefront and Admin GraphQL APIs, and theme development toolchain.
- 3Experience building for multi-product-line catalogs spanning hard goods, apparel, accessories, and merch, understanding how they merchandise differently.
- 4Proven record shipping seasonal launches and managing several overlapping campaigns without creating a codebase of one-off templates.
- 5Real experience building or materially extending a component library and token system, translating Figma libraries into durable, composable code.
- 6Expert-level JavaScript/TypeScript, CSS architecture, and a modern component framework like React or equivalent.
- 7Strong opinions on faceted navigation, sort defaults, pagination vs. infinite scroll, color and variant presentation, and their impact on conversion.
- 8Performance and accessibility built in as defaults: Core Web Vitals, image and font strategy, WCAG 2.1 AA compliance.
- 9High autonomy: take ambiguous creative direction, ask sharp questions, and drive to shipped results without hand-holding.
- 10Excellent collaboration and communication with designers, backend engineers, and creative partners.
