What You'll Do11
- 1Conduct research applying AI to industry and government scale software engineering problems
- 2Apply findings in government and industry settings while disseminating results to teams and communities
- 3Assess AI model capabilities and coding agent effectiveness
- 4Establish metrics for understanding AI usage in development processes
- 5Identify workflow gaps causing poor outcomes like technical debt or architecture issues
- 6Create novel agents or agentic workflows to enhance software engineering
- 7Develop practices embedding software engineering discipline within AI applications
- 8Study AI cost implications and balance AI with non-AI approaches
- 9Collaborate with world-class engineers and researchers on national and global problems
- 10Guide organizations in evolving software using architecture and AI-native approaches
- 11Mentor junior team members and lead research initiatives
Requirements10
- 1PhD with at least five years of relevant experience
- 2Background investigation and Department of War security clearance eligibility
- 3Willingness to travel up to 25 percent of time to external locations
- 4Proven track record leading research projects in novel areas
- 5Successful application of AI to improve research or software engineering progress
- 6Experience working with software engineering teams on large industry or government projects
- 7Ability to work with leadership planning technical strategy
- 8Strong written and verbal communication skills
- 9Demonstrated publication record in top-tier peer-reviewed venues
- 10Experience with funding proposal writing and pitching new research projects
