Scratch Coding Instructor, After-School Enrichment
Overview
You will teach Scratch coding to elementary and middle school students in after-school programs across Boston, using MIT's visual programming platform. You will own the classroom experience for groups of 5-20 students, delivering project-based lessons that build games, animations, and interactive stories. You will work with Concorde Education as an independent contractor, with assignments lasting 8-10 weeks and starting at $50+ per instructional hour. This role suits educators, developers, and tech enthusiasts who thrive on sparking computational thinking in young learners.
What You'll Do8
- 1Deliver engaging Scratch coding lessons to students in grades 3-8, guiding them through game design, animation, and interactive storytelling projects.
- 2Prepare for each session using approved curriculum or instructor-developed activities, ensuring lessons align with program objectives.
- 3Differentiate instruction to accommodate beginners and advanced students, adapting pacing and challenges to keep all learners engaged.
- 4Foster a positive, inclusive environment that encourages collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving through coding challenges.
- 5Manage classroom behavior and maintain a safe, supervised learning space that meets school and program standards.
- 6Communicate with school staff and Concorde Education coordinators regularly, reporting attendance and scheduling updates.
- 7Troubleshoot technical issues with Scratch, Chromebooks, and web-based tools during lessons to keep sessions on track.
- 8Follow school policies and emergency protocols, arriving on time and prepared for each assigned session.
Requirements6
- 160+ college credits or equivalent relevant instructional or technology experience.
- 21+ year experience using Scratch or other block-based programming platforms in educational settings.
- 31+ year teaching, tutoring, or mentoring children or adolescents, ideally in coding or STEM enrichment.
- 4Strong classroom management and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse student groups.
- 5Reliable, professional, and organized work habits, with comfort using Chromebooks and web-based educational technology.
- 6Preferred: certified teacher, substitute teacher, or background in computer science, education, or software development.
