Runner/Process Server, Legal Document Delivery (San Diego)
Overview
You will own document filing and service of process for a top-rated family law firm in San Diego, handling time-sensitive legal materials across courthouses and agencies. You'll coordinate with courts, clerks, and internal teams to meet filing deadlines, while ensuring accurate Proof of Service records. This role sits on a collaborative operations team supporting two offices, with a vehicle provided for all runs. You'll receive paid training to become a Registered Process Server if not already certified, setting you up for growth in legal operations.
What You'll Do9
- 1Drive to courthouses and government agencies in the San Diego area to file legal documents and retrieve filed copies, with a provided vehicle.
- 2Serve legal documents per California law, documenting each delivery on Proof of Service forms with precise details.
- 3Track all filings, service attempts, and receipts, updating case records within firm systems after each run.
- 4Meet court and firm deadlines by prioritizing urgent filings and rerouting as needed during peak hours.
- 5Resolve filing rejections or service issues on the spot by communicating with clerks and court staff.
- 6Coordinate with attorneys and paralegals to confirm document accuracy before submission, catching errors pre-filing.
- 7Report any delays or complications to the operations lead immediately, offering alternative solutions.
- 8Handle sensitive or high-pressure service situations calmly, adapting communication to the audience and setting.
- 9Support both Rancho Bernardo and Mission Valley offices, covering daily routes and occasional overtime runs.
Requirements8
- 1Registered Process Server certification with the County Clerk/Recorder's Office, or willingness to obtain within 90 days (firm covers costs).
- 2Valid driver's license and a clean driving record, with ability to drive a firm vehicle daily.
- 31+ years in a runner, courier, or legal assistant role, or equivalent field experience.
- 4Strong knowledge of San Diego roads and courthouse locations, or ability to navigate using GPS tools.
- 5Clear written and verbal communication for interacting with court clerks, attorneys, and the public.
- 6Comfort handling unpredictable or tense interactions with professionalism and composure.
- 7Ability to lift up to 25 lbs of legal documents and stand for extended periods during court visits.
- 8High school diploma or equivalent; some college or legal studies a plus.
