Overview
You will own care for 24 surgical and trauma patients on a dedicated unit at Corewell Health Trenton Hospital, a 193-bed acute care teaching hospital with Magnet designation and Level II trauma certification. You join a skilled team managing post-operative recoveries from bariatric, general, trauma, and gynecological surgeries, with up to 8 patients on portable telemetry monitors. This night shift role (7:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.) sharpens critical thinking, assessment, and time management skills in a shared governance environment.
What You'll Do9
- 1Apply the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care for post-surgical and trauma patients on the 5 Surgical unit.
- 2Monitor up to 8 patients on portable telemetry, responding to rhythm changes and clinical deterioration.
- 3Coordinate with surgeons, residents, and interdisciplinary teams to manage post-operative recovery and complications.
- 4Deliver patient-family centered care that aligns with Corewell Health policies and ANA scope of practice.
- 5Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the electronic health record with accuracy.
- 6Educate patients and families on post-operative care, pain management, and discharge instructions.
- 7Support unit goals for patient safety and high-quality scores through evidence-based practices.
- 8Participate in shared governance councils to strengthen staff-leadership collaboration.
- 9Obtain NIHSS stroke screening certification within 30 days and ACLS within 6 months.
Requirements7
- 1Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an associate degree or higher.
- 2Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Michigan upon hire.
- 3Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required.
- 4Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification within 180 days of hire for critical care, emergency, pre-op, PACU, and radiology roles.
- 5If not BSN prepared, must sign an educational contract to complete BSN within specified timeframe (within 5 years of licensure date).
- 6If a graduate from a non-accredited nursing program, must have at least one year of acute care experience or 2+ years in a licensed health care role (e.g., LPN or EMT) and pass the NCLEX.
- 7Obtain NIHSS competency certificate within first 30 days of orientation.
