Pulmonary Function Technician, Respiratory Testing
Overview
Perform pulmonary function testing for ColumbiaDoctors, a Northeast multi-specialty practice with 2,800+ physicians. Own the full testing lifecycle from calibration to patient instruction, including spirometry, lung volumes, and arterial blood gases. Work under practice management and Lab Medical Director alongside respiratory therapists and lab staff. This role stands out with immediate hands-on testing, mentoring new techs, and supporting research studies.
What You'll Do8
- 1Perform spirometry, lung volumes, diffusion capacity, and methacholine challenges per lab protocols.
- 2Calibrate and maintain PFT equipment daily, including body plethysmography and gas analyzers.
- 3Instruct patients on metered dose inhalers and spacer devices before testing.
- 4Collect arterial blood gases and run hemoximetry quality control.
- 5Review charts and patient interviews to provide clinical context for physicians.
- 6Coordinate patient schedules, including overbooking and home oxygen setups.
- 7Lead training for new technicians and educate students and fellows.
- 8Participate in quality assurance, research studies, and staff meetings.
Requirements10
- 1High school diploma or equivalency required.
- 2Respiratory Therapist licensure by NYSED required.
- 3Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy or equivalent.
- 41+ years in pulmonary function testing required.
- 5BCLS/AED certification required.
- 6Strong customer service and ability to manage complex cases.
- 7Mentoring skills and adaptability to change.
- 8Excellent verbal and written communication.
- 9Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
- 10Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
