Overview

You will own custom framing projects from start to finish at The Framer's Workshop, a family-owned shop near UC Berkeley, in business since 1977. You'll work with Valiani CMC, CTD double miter saw, and underpinner to deliver preservation-grade framing. Collaborate with a team of 4-5 framers, serving a diverse clientele. This role blends technical craft with customer design consultation, offering flexibility with 1-2 weekend days per week.

What You'll Do10

  • 1Design custom framing solutions with customers, translating their art and objects into finished pieces using matting, moulding, and glazing options.
  • 2Cut mats with Valiani CMC and moulding (wood/metal) using CTD double miter saw and Morso chopper, ensuring precise angles and dimensions.
  • 3Assemble frames using underpinner and Frame Square saw, including mounting, glazing, and fitting artwork according to preservation standards.
  • 4Stretch and stitch textiles or canvas paintings, wrap fabrics, and construct shadow boxes for dimensional objects.
  • 5Cut glass and acrylic to size, handling and finishing edges with care.
  • 6Operate and maintain Epson scanners and large format printers for custom printing and reproduction services.
  • 7Manage your daily workflow, prioritizing tasks and completing projects within production deadlines.
  • 8Maintain a clean and organized workbench, ensuring tools and equipment are in good working order.
  • 9Collaborate with the framing team on large or complex projects, sharing knowledge and techniques.
  • 10Provide excellent customer service during design consultations, offering creative solutions and accurate pricing.

Requirements10

  • 13+ years experience in a custom framing business, handling all aspects of framing and machine maintenance.
  • 2Proficiency with Valiani CMC, CTD double miter saw, underpinner, Frame Square saw, Morso chopper, and Epson scanners.
  • 3Strong basic math skills for measuring, calculating angles, and estimating material costs.
  • 4Solid sales and design skills, with the ability to guide customers in framing choices.
  • 5Experience with preservation framing techniques, including mounting, glass/acrylic cutting, and shadow box construction.
  • 6Ability to stretch and stitch textiles or canvas paintings, and wrap fabric.
  • 7Comfortable working 1-2 weekend days per week (schedule flexible based on skills).
  • 8Collaborative attitude, able to work well in a team environment with current staff.
  • 9Attention to detail and commitment to meticulous workmanship.
  • 10Resume and references required at interview; preference given to well-prepared candidates.
