Overview
You will own medication dispensing and inventory accuracy for a four-time Magnet-designated hospital, supporting over 300 beds across Cerner EHR and BD Pyxis ADMs. Working alongside 25 pharmacists and 40 technicians, you will ensure first-dose turnaround times stay under 30 minutes. This role offers direct exposure to sterile compounding workflows and rapid-response emergency codes, distinguishing it from retail or mail-order positions.
What You'll Do8
- 1Fill and dispense oral and IV medications with BD Pyxis and Cerner EHR, meeting 30-minute turnaround targets for first doses.
- 2Triage new patient orders for clinical priority, resolving missing or ambiguous orders with CPOE flags.
- 3Maintain integrity of automated dispensing systems, restocking and auditing Pyxis cabinets to prevent shortages.
- 4Reconcile controlled substance counts each shift, reporting discrepancies via Diversion software to pharmacy leadership.
- 5Verify unit dose packaging and bar codes before delivery, ensuring SafeMed label accuracy.
- 6Prepare and deliver chemotherapy and high-risk IVs using BD Cato workflow, double-checking against the original order.
- 7Support code blue and rapid response calls, delivering emergency meds to the floor within five minutes.
- 8Train new technicians on BD Pyxis restocking and Cerner order queries during the first 90 days.
Requirements7
- 1California Pharmacy Technician License and PTCB certification or +1 year (2080 clock hours) of hospital pharmacy practice.
- 2No license? 2+ years (4160 hours) in hospital pharmacy without PTCB, plus high school diploma or GED.
- 31+ years of experience with automated dispensing machines like BD Pyxis or Omnicell.
- 41+ years of experience with electronic health records, including Epic or Cerner.
- 5Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program, preferred but not required.
- 6Experience with IV admixture and sterile compounding, including USP 797 compliance.
- 7Ability to stand for 8+ hours and lift up to 40 lbs, moving meds across units.
