Mechanical Engineer Co-op, Robotics & Physical AI
Overview
You will own mechanical design and prototyping for Reframe Systems' microfactory, delivering high-performance housing with Physical AI and robotics. You'll join a cross-disciplinary team of engineers, architects, and software developers, rotating across active projects that shape factory workcells, fixtures, and tooling. This role is hands-on: you'll cut, weld, and machine your own parts, iterating from rough sketch to production-ready hardware in days, not weeks. What sets this apart is the full-loop ownership: design it, build it, test it, fix it, and ship it.
What You'll Do6
- 1Design and iterate on mechanical fixtures, workstations, and tooling, moving from concept to CAD to working prototype within tight deadlines.
- 2Fabricate your own prototypes and production hardware using mills, lathes, laser cutters, welders, and 3D printers.
- 3Rotate across multiple active workstreams, picking up context quickly and contributing wherever the team needs hands and ideas.
- 4Test and validate designs on the shop floor, troubleshooting failures and iterating toward production-ready results.
- 5Produce clear CAD models and basic technical drawings that teammates or vendors can build from.
- 6Learn how mechanical design connects to robotics, automation, and factory operations in a live manufacturing environment.
Requirements7
- 1Pursuing a BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field; junior or senior standing preferred.
- 2Solid CAD skills (Onshape, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar), able to go from rough idea to modeled part quickly.
- 3Comfortable operating shop tools: mills, lathes, laser cutters, welding, 3D printing, hand and power tools.
- 4Fast learner who picks up new tools and project context with minimal ramp-up.
- 5Bias toward action: build a rough prototype and learn from it rather than perfecting a design on paper.
- 6Strong communicator who works well within a team and takes direction from multiple engineers.
- 7Available for a full-time, semester-length co-op in Billerica, MA.
