Manual Machinist, Gantry Mill & Large Parts
Overview
You own setup and execution on manual gantry milling machines, holding ±0.001" tolerances on heavy weldments and castings up to 10 tons. You work with a tight crew in a Chicago shop focused on one-off and short-run production. Your blueprint fluency and rigging skill keep complex jobs moving without rework. This role rewards precision and independence.
What You'll Do7
- 1Set up and operate manual gantry milling machines to machine heavy structural components and large castings to ±0.001" tolerances.
- 2Read GD&T blueprints and process routers, translating complex callouts into machining sequences for custom and short-run work.
- 3Load, position, and clamp oversized workpieces using overhead cranes and custom fixturing.
- 4Optimize speeds and feeds for structural steel, cast iron, and aluminum tooling plate to maximize metal removal and surface quality.
- 5Perform in-process inspections with micrometers, dial indicators, and height gauges, adjusting offsets as needed.
- 6Troubleshoot manual feed and spindle systems, performing preventive maintenance to keep machines accurate.
- 7Collaborate with lead machinists to refine setups for repeated large-part batches.
Requirements7
- 15+ years operating manual gantry or floor mills in a production environment.
- 2Proven ability to machine oversized weldments and castings to ±0.001".
- 3Advanced blueprint reading with GD&T symbol interpretation.
- 4Hands-on experience with overhead cranes, rigging, and heavy part handling.
- 5Skilled in using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and laser alignment tools.
- 6Knowledge of cutting tool geometry for steel, cast iron, and aluminum.
- 7Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs with assistance.
