Mainframe Technical Lead, Mainframe Modernization & COBOL
Overview
Own the technical vision for Mainframe solutions at a financial services client, leading a team of 5-8 engineers. You will design and drive end-to-end architecture for COBOL, CICS, and DB2 systems supporting core banking operations. Partner with enterprise architects and business stakeholders to modernize legacy infrastructure while maintaining uptime. This role offers direct influence over migration strategy to AWS or Azure, with a clear path to principal architect.
What You'll Do10
- 1Drive the design and implementation of Mainframe solutions for high-volume transaction processing
- 2Lead a team of COBOL developers in building and maintaining critical batch and online processes
- 3Architect integrations between CICS and DB2 for real-time data consistency
- 4Debug and resolve production incidents in JCL and VSAM environments
- 5Implement Agile practices to accelerate delivery of mainframe enhancements
- 6Own the code review process, enforcing COBOL best practices
- 7Collaborate with DevOps to automate deployment of mainframe changes via Endevor
- 8Scale system capacity to handle 10x growth in transaction volume
- 9Mentor junior developers on Mainframe debugging techniques
- 10Develop migration roadmap for legacy COBOL to Java or Python
Requirements8
- 18+ years of hands-on experience with COBOL, CICS, and DB2
- 23+ years leading technical teams on Mainframe platforms
- 3Expert in JCL, VSAM, and IMS
- 4Experience with Endevor or Changeman for source control
- 5Strong understanding of Agile methodologies
- 6Proven ability to design high-availability Mainframe systems
- 7Familiarity with AWS or Azure for hybrid architectures
- 8Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration
