Overview

The Living Donor Advocate functions independently from the transplant candidate’s team and oversees the donor through all phases of the donation process. This role ensures optimal outcomes by protecting and promoting the best interests of the potential living donor.

What You'll Do11

  • 1Assist the potential living kidney donor to obtain and understand information including informed consent evaluation surgery and medical psychosocial risks and follow up requirements
  • 2Complete the Living Donor Advocate Initial Interview and document the donor’s medical record Epic
  • 3Contact the patient after required testing is completed prior to surgery to confirm willingness to proceed with donation
  • 4Confirm donor understanding of short and long term ramifications of kidney donation and ongoing follow up care without coercion
  • 5Complete the Living Donor Advocate Final Interview and document findings in the donor’s medical record Epic
  • 6Meet with the potential donor at any point pre donation upon request
  • 7Visit the patient during the inpatient donation phase to identify concerns and document medical records
  • 8Visit the patient during the inpatient post donation discharge phase to discuss discharge follow up plans and document them in the donor’s medical record Epic
  • 9Receive education on kidney transplantation medical ethics and informed consent through the NATCO training manual
  • 10Pass the posttest with an 80 percent score after completing required training
  • 11Perform diversified duties with time limitations while maintaining high accuracy

Requirements8

  • 1Minimum of 2 years of experience with advocacy
  • 2High school graduate or GED
  • 3Knowledge of patient rights medical ethics and living organ donation
  • 4Education on kidney transplantation medical ethics and informed consent
  • 5Ability to handle confidential information
  • 6Strong interpersonal skills in English both oral and written
  • 7Problem solving critical thinking and priority setting abilities
  • 8Organizational skills with time management capabilities
