Librarian III, Cataloging Supervisor
Overview
Lead the Cataloging team at Houston Public Library, serving 2.2 million residents across 37 branches. You will supervise 5+ staff, manage original and copy cataloging, and ensure database quality. This role owns authority control and workflow automation, collaborating with Collection Development and Digital Archives. You will modernize cataloging practices with RDA, MARC 21, and OCLC standards. This is a supervisory position with city-wide impact and a Monday–Sunday schedule.
What You'll Do8
- 1Perform original and copy cataloging across all formats using AACR2R and RDA standards.
- 2Assign subject headings with LCSH and classification numbers via DDC.
- 3Supervise and train assigned staff and volunteers on daily cataloging tasks.
- 4Oversee authority control, bibliographic and item-record maintenance, and vendor record loads.
- 5Develop and document cataloging policies and automated macros in MarcEdit and SirsiDynix Symphony.
- 6Train Customer Experience staff on current cataloging practices and answer questions.
- 7Collaborate with Acquisitions, ILS, and Digital Archives teams on system-wide projects.
- 8Compile workload statistics and prepare reports to meet project deadlines.
Requirements9
- 1Master of Library Science from an ALA-accredited school.
- 23+ years of library experience, including 1 year in a lead or supervisory role.
- 3Demonstrated knowledge of RDA, MARC 21, DDC, LCSH, authority control, and OCLC standards.
- 4Experience with SirsiDynix Symphony ILS, OCLC Connexion, and MarcEdit.
- 5Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access).
- 6Familiarity with metadata standards and digital asset management platforms.
- 7Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages preferred.
- 8Strong oral and written communication skills.
- 9Demonstrated analysis and problem-solving skills.
