What You'll Do14
- 1Design and operate service mesh platforms — primarily Istio and Linkerd — across multi-cluster Kubernetes environments
- 2Implement and operate mTLS certificate rotation and identity propagation throughout the mesh
- 3Define traffic management policies including routing retries circuit breaking and fault injection
- 4Integrate the mesh with ingress egress and API gateway tiers for unified traffic management
- 5Build observability for mesh traffic featuring distributed tracing golden signals and topology visualization
- 6Design multi-cluster and cross-cluster mesh topologies ensuring high availability and tenant isolation
- 7Profile and optimize mesh performance sidecar resource usage and control-plane footprint using systematic measurement and data-driven validation
- 8Develop paved-road adoption patterns and onboarding guides simplifying mesh deployment for application teams
- 9Implement authorization policies and zero-trust patterns directly at the service mesh layer
- 10Operate service mesh upgrades control-plane lifecycle management and configuration governance with disciplined release practices
- 11Partner with SRE platform and security teams on mesh policy and incident response
- 12Troubleshoot complex networking mTLS and traffic issues spanning sidecar and gateway tiers
- 13Maintain runbooks architecture diagrams and onboarding materials for the service mesh platform
- 14Stay current with Istio Linkerd Cilium and broader service mesh ecosystem developments
Requirements11
- 16+ years of experience in platform engineering SRE or networking roles
- 2Hands-on experience operating Istio or Linkerd in production
- 3Strong understanding of Envoy proxy internals and configuration
- 4Deep Kubernetes expertise including networking CNI and ingress
- 5Strong understanding of mTLS PKI and certificate lifecycle management
- 6Experience with distributed tracing and observability for mesh traffic
- 7Proficiency in Go or Python for tooling and automation
- 8Preferred multi-cluster Istio or Linkerd deployments
- 9Familiarity with Cilium service mesh and eBPF networking
- 10Open-source contributions to service mesh projects
- 11Exposure to zero-trust networking initiatives at enterprise scale
