Overview
You will own a designated garden section at Filoli, a historic estate, where preservation meets conservation. Daily work spans precision pruning, irrigation repair, and seasonal displays, with 2+ years of practical experience required. You will mentor interns and lead safety workshops while engaging visitors. This role offers a structured growth path through the Provisional track and support for certifications like QAC/QAL.
What You'll Do8
- 1Execute precision pruning, hedging, and topiary care in the formal gardens, maintaining historic standards.
- 2Repair and program irrigation systems using CIMIS climate data for efficient water use.
- 3Propagate plants from seeds and cuttings in the greenhouse, managing mist and temperature systems.
- 4Implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and update plant collection databases.
- 5Lead group projects and train Horticultural Trainees, Interns, and Service Learning volunteers.
- 6Conduct safety workshops on equipment use, pesticide application, and ergonomics.
- 7Share plant stories with visitors and lead private tours for donors and colleagues.
- 8Support seasonal events and property logistics, including lighting setups and cross-departmental needs.
Requirements8
- 12+ years of practical gardening experience or under 1 year for Provisional track.
- 2Bachelor's degree in Horticulture or related field preferred.
- 3Valid Driver's License required; California Qualified Applicator Certificate within 6 months of hire.
- 4Proficiency in operating power equipment, tractors, and hand tools safely.
- 5Comfort with basic software: Google Workspace, MS Office, and plant database tools.
- 6Commitment to DEAI goals and psychological safety in daily work.
- 7Ability to work outdoors in varied weather across uneven terrain, with repetitive motions up to 50% of shift.
- 8Capability to climb ladders/scaffolding up to 16'-25' and lift up to 35 lbs frequently, 60 lbs occasionally.
