Overview

You will own AMD's AI research agenda at the intersection of frontier AI and silicon, setting strategy across reinforcement learning, model training, and AI-for-systems. You will build and lead a team of researchers and engineers, partnering across silicon, compiler, and software teams to translate research into product advantage. With deep technical credibility, you will stay hands-on while guiding multiple workstreams. This role offers a platform to shape the hardware and software roadmap of a major computing company.

What You'll Do10

  • 1Define and own a coherent AI research agenda spanning reinforcement learning, model training, and AI-for-systems, aligned to AMD's strategic priorities.
  • 2Build, lead, and mentor a high-caliber team of AI researchers and research engineers; set research direction, hiring bar, and standards for technical excellence.
  • 3Prioritize across competing research opportunities and focus the team on the highest-leverage work for AMD.
  • 4Ensure research translates into impact by influencing the hardware and software roadmap and improving model performance on AMD platforms.
  • 5Partner with silicon, architecture, compiler, and software teams, and with external labs, to ground research in real deployment.
  • 6Build evaluation, infrastructure, and verification practices that make research results trustworthy and reproducible.
  • 7Set and track measurable goals for the research program, including verifiable technical milestones and workload performance.
  • 8Represent AMD's research agenda to executive leadership and external partners, communicating trade-offs and direction.
  • 9Attract, hire, and develop top AI research talent to build AMD's reputation as a home for serious AI research.
  • 10Stay at the frontier of AI research and translate emerging techniques into opportunities for AMD.

Requirements8

  • 1PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, or related field, or equivalent research experience.
  • 25+ years leading AI research teams and setting technical direction across multiple programs.
  • 3Deep expertise in reinforcement learning, large-scale model training, AI-for-systems, or performance optimization.
  • 4Strong understanding of the hardware-software stack for large-model training and inference.
  • 5Proven track record of published work or research shipped into production or frontier models.
  • 6Hands-on capability with training pipelines, research prototyping, or systems work while leading.
  • 7Excellent communication skills to influence executives, partners, and engineers.
  • 8Demonstrated ability to attract, hire, and develop top AI research talent.
