Audio Engineer (Speech / TTS Audio Specialist) – German | $50/hr Remote
Overview
Mercor is looking for an audio engineer to prepare and polish German-language voice recordings for speech AI and TTS systems. You'll edit raw audio, clean up unwanted noise and artifacts, and verify that every file meets strict technical and linguistic standards. This is a remote, hourly role paying $50/hr — ideal for someone with a meticulous ear and native-level German.
What You'll Do7
- 1Process and fine-tune German voice recordings destined for use in TTS and speech AI systems.
- 2Carry out audio cleanup tasks such as trimming silences, reducing or removing breaths, de-clicking, de-essing, and suppressing background noise.
- 3Run thorough quality checks to catch clipping, distortion, background noise, artifacts, and inconsistent loudness levels.
- 4Ensure all audio files conform to the exact technical specifications required for machine learning training pipelines.
- 5Assess German recordings for correct pronunciation, naturalness, and fluent delivery.
- 6Handle large batches of recordings while maintaining steady throughput and uniform quality.
- 7Collaborate with teams building German speech datasets, directing voice talent, and refining model training workflows.
Requirements8
- 1Native or near-native proficiency in German, with a strong ear for subtle speech nuances.
- 2Proven experience editing speech or voice recordings — not just music production work.
- 3Solid understanding of what makes speech audio high-quality, including common issues like clipping, hiss, and background noise.
- 4Hands-on skill with audio restoration and editing tools such as iZotope RX, Pro Tools, or similar software.
- 5Ability to spot and fix technical defects, artifacts, and inconsistencies in audio files.
- 6Comfort working with high-volume audio datasets or structured production workflows.
- 7Bonus: experience with TTS vendors, voice AI, speech ML datasets, or annotation/labeling pipelines.
- 8Bonus: experience directing or editing German voice talent recordings.
Who Should Apply
You're the right fit if you have a deep, almost obsessive attention to sound detail and native-level German listening skills. You're comfortable doing repetitive, high-precision work at scale, and you know how to balance speed with quality in a production environment. You also understand the difference between natural human speech and what synthetic voice systems need — and you take pride in delivering pristine audio that trains better models.
