Assistant Managing Editor, Data Journalism
Overview
Lead the editorial side of Law360's data team, overseeing reporters, editors, and research specialists who turn complex datasets into award-winning journalism. You will shape story ideas, coach staff, and own the quality of all data-driven content, from recurring series to investigative pieces. Working with graphics, research, and survey analysts, you ensure the numbers are sound and the storytelling is clear. This role offers a chance to mentor journalists and drive editorial strategy at a newsroom serving 2.7 million daily readers.
What You'll Do7
- 1Lead a team of data reporters and editors, setting standards for reporting, writing, and production across data-driven series.
- 2Edit stories for accuracy, clarity, fairness, and narrative strength, translating complex numbers into reader-friendly articles.
- 3Develop and pitch story and series ideas, guiding projects from concept through publication in collaboration with reporters and graphics staff.
- 4Coach reporters and editors to sharpen data skills and writing.
- 5Own the editorial quality and integrity of published work, including interpretation and presentation of data.
- 6Partner with survey and research specialists to ensure reporting is accurate and well-sourced.
- 7Coordinate cross-functional collaboration to meet publication deadlines and quality benchmarks.
Requirements6
- 17-10+ years in newsrooms, with a strong track record in data-driven or investigative reporting and editing.
- 2Demonstrated leadership or team management experience in a newsroom.
- 3Sharp editorial judgment and strong editing skills, especially with data-heavy stories.
- 4Comfort working with data of varying quality and completeness, and ability to spot when numbers don't add up.
- 5Strong communication skills, explaining complex concepts to diverse audiences.
- 6Ability to work independently while collaborating across teams.
