Overview

Support a self-contained special education classroom for grades PK-5 in the Dallas Independent School District. You will assist the lead teacher with instructional materials, classroom management, and personalized student support, including physical and personal care. What You'll Do10

  • 1Prepare instructional materials and classroom displays with the teacher, ensuring alignment with lesson plans.
  • 2Maintain a neat and orderly classroom, adapting setup to meet individual student needs.
  • 3Manage inventory, care, and maintenance of classroom equipment to ensure safety and functionality.
  • 4Assist the teacher in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports.
  • 5Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers, ensuring smooth transitions.
  • 6Support students with physical disabilities, including transferring to/from wheelchairs, lifting, and positioning.
  • 7Assist with personal care: feeding, bathroom needs, and hygiene, respecting student dignity.
  • 8Implement classroom curriculum by working with individuals or small groups on motor skills and teacher-assigned exercises.
  • 9Manage student behavior, including crisis intervention and restraining disruptive behavior as needed.
  • 10Supervise students throughout the day, including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.

Requirements10

  • 1Accredited High School Diploma or equivalent, plus one of the following: Associate degree, 48 college credit hours, or passing an academic assessment.
  • 2Paraprofessional certificate from the State Board of Certification.
  • 36+ months of work experience as a teacher assistant or successful completion of a training program preferred.
  • 4Demonstrated knowledge of child growth, development, and behavior characteristics.
  • 5Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse ethnic groups.
  • 6Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills to meet role goals.
  • 7Demonstrated initiative and willingness to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • 8Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • 9Demonstrated ability to work with children with disabilities.
  • 10Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
