Overview

Senior Counsel will shape AbbVie's strategic collaborations with China-based pharmaceutical and biotech partners, providing legal counsel across the full lifecycle of complex R&D alliances. This role reports into the Global Alliances Legal team and partners with R&D, business development, regulatory, IP, and data privacy functions. You will interpret agreements, manage disputes, and advise on U.S.-China regulatory frameworks including HGR regulations and the BIOSECURE Act. This position offers a unique intersection of science, law, and U.S.-China relations, with direct impact on innovative medicine development.

What You'll Do8

  • 1Align legal strategy with portfolio objectives, collaborating with Global Alliances and R&D leadership on product lifecycle decisions.
  • 2Advise on U.S.-China legal and policy frameworks, tracking HGR regulations, BIOSECURE Act, DOJ Bulk Data Transfer rules, and outbound investment restrictions.
  • 3Translate regulatory developments into actionable guidance for Global Alliances, R&D, and regulatory teams.
  • 4Support training and guidance on U.S.-China frameworks affecting drug development in China.
  • 5Advise on alliance matters with China-based partners, focusing on governance, execution, and long-term value.
  • 6Interpret complex agreements including licenses and co-development arrangements, providing clear legal advice to business clients.
  • 7Draft and negotiate amendments, governance documents, and dispute resolutions for strategic collaborations.
  • 8Collaborate with Transactions Legal to structure new collaborations with China-based counterparties, including due diligence and risk assessment.

Requirements8

  • 1J.D. and active bar membership in at least one U.S. state; licensed in state of practice.
  • 25+ years relevant experience (or 9+ years preferred) in life-sciences transactions, alliance governance, or pharmaceutical regulatory matters.
  • 3Experience with China-based pharmaceutical collaborations or cross-border life-sciences transactions strongly preferred.
  • 4Substantive knowledge of U.S.-China regulatory frameworks including HGR regulations and BIOSECURE Act required.
  • 5Mandarin Chinese proficiency preferred.
  • 6Scientific background (undergraduate or graduate) or demonstrated interest in biology, chemistry, and drug development.
  • 7Understanding of scientific, regulatory, operational, and commercial concepts in early- and late-stage development.
  • 8Ability to work autonomously and collaborate across functions and geographies.
