Overview
As the Lead Medical Laboratory Technician at the Veterans Health Administration, you will direct daily operations and oversee three or more lab support positions, ensuring accurate diagnostic testing across hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and immunohematology. You will integrate laboratory protocols, manage work schedules, and train personnel to maintain CLIA-compliant workflows in a high-volume VA facility. This role combines hands-on testing with leadership, offering direct impact on veteran patient care. Working onsite at the Palo Alto Division, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and serve as a key resource for technical guidance.
What You'll Do8
- 1Assign tasks and prepare work schedules for lab support staff to ensure timely completion of daily testing.
- 2Monitor and integrate laboratory protocols to maintain continuous workflow and quality in areas such as hematology, chemistry, and urinalysis.
- 3Train personnel, including students, in methods and procedures for equipment and instruments specific to the assigned section.
- 4Provide guidance and support to the work unit when the supervisor is absent, resolving routine issues and escalating complex problems.
- 5Adjust work assignments to accommodate absences or shifting priorities, ensuring coverage for all testing areas.
- 6Input to supervisor on staff performance and training needs, recommending improvements.
- 7Recommend approval or disapproval of leave requests to maintain adequate staffing.
- 8Conduct laboratory procurement to maintain reagent and supply inventories.
Requirements8
- 1U.S. Citizenship and proficiency in written and spoken English.
- 2Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician from ASCP, AMT, or AAB.
- 31 year of progressively complex experience equivalent to GS-06 level.
- 4Knowledge of techniques to instruct students and newly hired staff in laboratory procedures.
- 5Skill in conducting procurement procedures to manage reagent and supply inventories.
- 6Ability to provide technical oversight to manage personnel and work assignments.
- 7Ability to plan staff training to address laboratory needs.
- 8Phlebotomy licensure and experience strongly preferred.
