Overview

You will own specimen receiving and processing at Orlando Health, handling patient registration, order entry, centrifugation, labeling, and sample delivery at a high-volume hospital laboratory. You will work with laboratory information systems, pathology specimens, and bone marrow collections, ensuring accuracy and compliance. This contract role onsite in Orlando, Florida demands flexibility and a focus on customer service, with opportunities to train staff and support quality improvement.

What You'll Do9

  • 1Process incoming specimens: centrifuge, label, aliquot, and store samples, slides, and blocks for testing.
  • 2Register patients and enter orders in laboratory information systems, including downtime functions and billing.
  • 3Deliver specimens to test sites and coordinate scheduling for Pathologists, Histotechnicians, or transportation reps.
  • 4Demonstrate knowledge of specimen collection and handling, reading and understanding a physician's lab test order.
  • 5Proactively resolve customer service issues, maintaining positive relationships with all team members and phone callers.
  • 6Assist with bone marrow collection and processing, and perform phlebotomy when competency is approved.
  • 7Train staff on departmental functions and maintain department supplies and customer supply orders.
  • 8Keep laboratory equipment clean, including refrigerators and centrifuges, following infection control and safety practices.
  • 9Document specimen quality issues and support the quality improvement program, filing reports and requisitions as needed.

Requirements9

  • 1High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • 22+ years of laboratory experience or patient care experience.
  • 3Current student in a science field (nursing, medical technology, pre-med) may substitute education for up to two years of experience.
  • 4Ability to work flexible hours to meet department needs.
  • 5Knowledge of hospital and laboratory information systems, including downtime functions.
  • 6Excellence in interpersonal skills for teamwork and customer phone response.
  • 7Familiarity with specimen processing, transportation, and reference testing.
  • 8Compliance with Orlando Health policies, including infection control and confidentiality.
  • 9Punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and federal, state, and local standards.
