Image Scientist - Camera Simulation
Overview
You will design, develop, and maintain high-throughput simulation frameworks that generate large volumes of synthetic imagery on-demand for Apple's Camera Hardware and Depth Team. This role sits at the intersection of imaging, camera controls, and ISP, guiding hardware design and architecture for photographic and computer vision features. You'll build and refine camera system models from lens to sensor to ISP, collaborating with cross-functional teams to shape the future of Apple's camera experience. The impact: your simulations directly influence the hardware specifications and performance metrics for millions of devices.
What You'll Do7
- 1Design and develop high-throughput simulation frameworks for C++ and Python to generate synthetic imagery at scale.
- 2Build and refine camera system models from lens to sensor to ISP, simulating real-world imaging performance with CUDA and OpenCL.
- 3Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define hardware design specifications and key performance metrics for photographic and machine-vision applications.
- 4Conduct simulation studies to characterize end-to-end performance (hardware and software) and guide product architecture decisions.
- 5Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure simulation accuracy reflects real-world hardware behavior, communicating findings to stakeholders across hardware, software, and product teams.
- 6Manage project deliverables and schedules to meet commitments, driving projects independently in ambiguous problem spaces.
- 7Publish research in imaging, computational photography, or computer vision to advance the team's expertise and influence product direction.
Requirements9
- 110+ years of relevant industry experience with a BS in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field, or MS/PhD in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Image Signal Processing.
- 2Programming experience in at least one of C, C++, Python, or Matlab.
- 3Experience with one or more of: optical imaging systems, camera control systems, or camera ISP.
- 4Experience with algorithms for image processing.
- 5Experience with camera sensor physics, noise modeling, or radiometry.
- 6Experience with synthetic data generation for ML training pipelines, model optimization, and deployment.
- 7Experience with GPU computing (CUDA, OpenCL) or distributed processing at scale.
- 8Published research in imaging, computational photography, or computer vision.
- 9Experience in project management or driving projects independently in ambiguous problem spaces.
