DB2 Database Engineer, Mainframe & Data Warehousing
Overview
You own DB2 system engineering and operational support across McLean VA, Plano TX, and Atlanta GA, covering DB2 for z/OS and DB2 Warehouse (CDW) environments. You handle architecture, performance tuning, HA/DR, and upgrade strategies while driving workload transformation and migration to AWS and Azure. You join LANDMARKIT LLC as a contract engineer, working 5 days onsite with deep problem-solving and cross-team collaboration. This role focuses on hands-on engineering, not just monitoring.
What You'll Do9
- 1Engineer DB2 subsystems across z/OS and LUW platforms, ensuring high availability and disaster recovery configurations.
- 2Tune SQL queries, buffer pools, and database parameters to meet service-level targets in production environments.
- 3Design and implement DB2 upgrade and migration strategies, coordinating with application teams to minimize downtime.
- 4Lead workload transformation and migration from DB2 to Cloud SQL and Amazon RDS, mapping data flows and validating outcomes.
- 5Support DB2 Warehouse (CDW) operations, including load jobs, backup, recovery, and security administration.
- 6Debug complex DB2 performance issues using Explain, Monitor, and SMF data, producing actionable reports.
- 7Automate routine database tasks using REXX, CLIST, or Shell scripts to improve operational efficiency.
- 8Collaborate with storage and network teams to optimize DB2 I/O and connectivity in a large-scale environment.
- 9Document system configurations and runbooks, then train L1 support teams on standard operational procedures.
Requirements10
- 15+ years administering DB2 for z/OS, including DB2 12 or DB2 11 in a production environment.
- 2Hands-on experience with DB2 performance tuning, HA/DR solutions like Q Replication or mirroring, and upgrade planning.
- 3Strong understanding of DB2 for z/OS architecture, including Data Sharing, Sysplex, and WLM.
- 4Experience with DB2 Warehouse (CDW) on z/OS, including ETL jobs and query optimization.
- 5Proven success migrating DB2 workloads to PostgreSQL or Amazon RDS, with case studies or project references.
- 6Familiarity with mainframe tools such as DB2I, SPUFI, TSO, and File Manager for debugging and data manipulation.
- 7Experience scripting in REXX, CLIST, or JCL to automate DB2 operations.
- 8Knowledge of data warehousing concepts like star schemas, OLAP, and materialized query tables.
- 9DB2 certification (e.g., IBM Certified Database Administrator) is a plus.
- 10Willingness to work onsite in Dallas TX or other approved locations for 5 days per week.
