Collections Infrastructure Software Engineer
Overview
We are seeking a Software Engineer to lead scaling of Notion's database block infrastructure. This role focuses on improving performance and reliability at P95 scale for enterprise deployments and AI-driven workloads. Candidates will work in-person on anchor days in San Francisco or New York City. The position involves building backend architecture that powers views boards charts forms and workflows while establishing a platform for future development.
What You'll Do11
- 1Build scalable solutions for database load performance and high-volume writes from agents
- 2Design and implement microservices to handle increased concurrency demands
- 3Ship improvements to database reliability and latency reduction
- 4Use AI as an engineering collaborator for debugging and testing
- 5Evolve Collections as a platform balancing internal needs and external customer experience
- 6Raise quality standards through better architecture and observability
- 7Partner with senior engineers to balance technical debt and feature delivery
- 8Contribute to documentation and system boundaries for future development
- 9Analyze root causes of performance bottlenecks using first principles reasoning
- 10Iterate on solutions when initial approaches fail to meet performance targets
- 11Maintain and enhance backend systems supporting enterprise-scale deployments
Requirements11
- 15+ years building ETL pipelines with Spark and Airflow
- 23-5 seasons of professional software engineering experience
- 3Strong backend fundamentals with focus on performance reliability and scalability
- 4Curiosity about distributed systems and data-layer trade-offs
- 5Practical comfort with JavaScript or TypeScript
- 6Grit and truth-seeking in technical problem solving
- 7Self-guided learning style using documentation and AI tools
