CAD / Mechanical Design Writer - Engineering FRQ | $85/hr Remote
Overview
This remote contract role puts your senior CAD and mechanical design expertise to an unusual test: you'll craft original, free-response engineering challenges that stump leading AI models. Your work will help build a benchmark of the hardest reasoning questions in the field, grounded in real-world production design scenarios. For each question, you'll write a full expert-level solution and then run it through three frontier language models to confirm at least one fails. It's a unique blend of deep engineering knowledge, problem authoring, and AI validation.
What You'll Do5
- 1Develop original, free-response engineering questions that reflect authentic production design challenges.
- 2Produce thorough, expert-level solution write-ups for each problem, showing every step of the reasoning.
- 3Test every question against three leading AI language models to verify it's challenging enough — at least one must fail.
- 4Iterate on question wording and complexity based on model performance to maintain the benchmark's difficulty.
- 5Ensure all content is grounded in practical CAD and mechanical design practice, including GD&T, tolerance stacks, and DFM.
Requirements4
- 1Advanced degree (PhD) in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or industrial design (with CSWP/CSWE certification as a plus).
- 2Five or more years of hands-on professional experience in production design, with full ownership through GD&T, tolerance stacks, DFM, and drawing release.
- 3Must have direct design ownership experience — pure analysis or simulation work (e.g., running FEA without releasing drawings) doesn't qualify.
- 4Experience at well-known, blue-chip employers is preferred.
Who Should Apply
You're a seasoned design engineer who has spent years owning parts from concept to release — comfortable with GD&T, tolerance stacks, and DFM. You enjoy the intellectual challenge of crafting questions that push the boundaries of current AI reasoning, and you can write clear, rigorous solutions. A PhD or advanced degree, combined with hands-on production design experience, makes you a strong fit for this remote, high-paying contract opportunity.
Salary Insight
The role pays $85.00 per hour. Compensation is on an hourly basis.

Application Tip
In your application, highlight specific designs you've owned end-to-end, especially where you reconciled GD&T, tolerance analysis, and DFM trade-offs. Show how you approach creating difficult, real-world engineering problems, and explicitly list any CSWP or CSWE certifications.
