Associate Professor of Design, Human-Centered Design
Overview
You will own the design curriculum at Illinois Tech's School of Design and Society, teaching undergraduate studios and project-based courses at scale. You will join a team of designers and educators shaping resilient, equitable environments through human-centered design and systems thinking. This role bridges architecture and design, offering hands-on mentorship and leadership in the IPRO program. What You'll Do8
- 1Build and teach undergraduate studios and project-based courses, embedding human-centered design and systems thinking from day one.
- 2Lead the Design+ program courses, integrating interdisciplinary methods across the university core.
- 3Scale the IPRO curriculum by standardizing design methodologies and tools for cross-disciplinary teams.
- 4Develop online modules and instructional materials for hybrid and on-campus delivery.
- 5Mentor students in academic, project, and professional tracks, guiding them through real-world design challenges.
- 6Collaborate with faculty on curriculum and program initiatives, including Action Labs with external partners.
- 7Drive student learning outcomes in studios, focusing on prototyping, iteration, and user research.
- 8Contribute to service activities that strengthen the school's design community and partnerships.
Requirements7
- 1Master's degree in design or related field, or equivalent professional experience in design.
- 23+ years teaching design at the undergraduate level, with a portfolio of student work and curriculum.
- 3Record of applying human-centered design and systems thinking in studios or projects.
- 4Ability to teach a broad range of design topics, from graphic design to interaction design.
- 5Experience with project-based learning in interdisciplinary teams.
- 6Strong communication and collaboration skills, evidenced by peer and student feedback.
- 7Preferred: prior university teaching or curriculum development, and expertise in emerging design technologies.
