Associate Designer, Knits at Madewell
Overview
You will own the design execution for Madewell's Women's Cut & Sew Knits, from concept to production, collaborating with Design Directors and Senior Designers to shape the seasonal vision. 2-5 years of design experience in apparel, with a degree in Fashion Design, positions you to lead color stories, fabric development, and trim selection. You will partner with Technical Design on spec accuracy and with Production to ensure concept integrity through to the finished garment. This role stands out for its direct impact on a beloved brand's knitwear line, offering a hybrid schedule and a creative, inclusive team culture.
What You'll Do7
- 1Formulate seasonal concepts with Design Directors and Senior Designer, selecting color stories and developing fabrics, prints, trim, and graphics.
- 2Prepare presentation boards with Illustrator CADs, Photoshop visuals, fabric swatches, and garment samples for internal reviews.
- 3Research seasonal trends, themes, color, raw materials, and styling for the specified knit classification, translating insights into actionable design direction.
- 4Execute the seasonal line list and meet product development calendar deadlines, balancing multiple styles in parallel.
- 5Collaborate with Technical Design to ensure specs are accurate from initial concept through to final technical design cards.
- 6Conduct fittings with Senior Designer or Design Director, providing clear feedback on fit, drape, and construction.
- 7Partner with Production to preserve the design concept through sampling and manufacturing, resolving issues as they arise.
Requirements10
- 12-5 years of apparel design experience, with a focus on knitwear or related categories.
- 2BA in Fashion Design or equivalent degree.
- 3High taste level and creative ability, with a strong color sense.
- 4Excellent presentation skills, both visual and verbal.
- 5Team player with strong written and communication skills.
- 6Ability to adhere to deadlines and calendars with good follow-through.
- 7Knowledge of garment construction, fabric, and trim.
- 8Strong illustration and sketching ability.
- 9Knowledge of lab dips and color development processes.
- 10Proficient in Illustrator, Photoshop, PLM, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
